LEOPARD / BENCH / GALERIE KREO / 2022
-
Made entirely of brass, this bench finds its particularity in its leopard pattern. A succession of different stages of brushing carefully carried out by hand on the surface of the metal draws an almost living golden fur whose reflections change according to the light. Consisting of three folded sheet metal elements, the form draws more from industrial than animal vocabulary. However, coupled with the stains, the viewer's imagination transforms these brass pieces into a graceful feline.
As in many pieces by Jean-Baptiste Fastrez, the Leopard bench stages a discussion between figuration and abstraction, free form and rational form, industrial and artisanal aesthetics. The use of the Leopard pattern is a statement in favor of breaking with established aesthetic codes. Undoubtedly one of the most used animal motifs in the history of fashion and decorative arts, today it belongs as much to the codes of classic luxury as to those of popular aesthetics or streetwear. It therefore appears to be an effective tool for breaking down the barriers that separate styles and eras.
